Debt slavery, also known as bonded labor, is a form of modern-day slavery. It refers to the practice of forcing individuals or families into labor in order to repay a debt. In Pakistan, debt slavery primarily affects rural communities where poverty and lack of access to education and employment opportunities leave people vulnerable to exploitation by “landlords”. These individuals often take advantage of people's desperate need for money by offering loans with high interest rates and unrealistic repayment terms. Once a person or family has accepted a loan, they become trapped in a cycle of debt which can last for generations.

Impoverished families are lured into debt traps by “landlords” where they are forced to work long hours to pay off. Through deceptive practices, these “landlords” trap families into insurmountable debts they can’t pay off.

People are often lured into working under false promises of decent pay and living conditions.
